Last weekend, using the first volume of Stephen Millar’s London’s Hidden Walks as our guide, my partner, Sarah, and I undertook a walk from Canada Water to Greenwich, via Deptford: in other words, East Rotherhithe.
Beginning at Canada Water proved a particularly good idea as it afforded the opportunity to buy an excellent flat white from the small van belonging to Mouse Tail Coffee and then a chance to look around the newish and quite magnificent Canada Water Library, every part of which, mid-morning Saturday, was busily and quietly in use. When other libraries are either closing altogether or being turned over to volunteers, hats off to the London Borough of Southwark!
After following the river some distance, at Pepys’ Park we headed inland towards Deptford High Street and Manze’s Pie & Mash Shop. A second flat white from The Waiting Room and it was back down towards the river and the assorted dancers who were jiving the afternoon away to music provided by the London Swing Dance Society in the shadow of the Cutty Sark.
